Missoni reversible jacket, I tell you the GODS love me….

Just days after receiving a Missoni blazer and shirt, voila another gift.  I was flipping through the coat rack section in one thrift store when my eyes recognized that very distinctive pattern so as my eyes traveled north to see the label,  I was pleasantly surprised to see a vintage Missoni tag.  The jacket turned out to be reversible, which is fantastic because one day I can wear it with the gorgeous wild knit pattern , the next day turn it inside out and have this rich solid rust color corduroyIt’s the best of both worlds and I am so grateful to be its new guardian.  The 2 for the price of 1

jacket was priced at $5.25 so you know I was excited, in fact so excited I worn it out of the thrift store.  I needed to be extra close to the jacket so it could feel my thankfulness.  Toodles for now.  Daniel

My 11Alive News appearing on thrifting.

11Alive News

Lots of people spent late December cleaning out closets to donate unwanted stuff and catch a tax write off. Come January, it’s a great time to go thrifting.

For Daniel Troppy just about every day is a good time to go thrifting; he hits 2 or 3 secondhand stores a day. “I’ve found Gucci items with the tags still on,” he said. Troppy resells expensive items on E-bay and writes a blog called thethrifters.net. On a recent shopping trip at the Cathedral of Saint Philip  Thrift Store on Piedmont Avenue, he wore
Prada shoes, Dolce and Gabbana pants, a Dior sweater and a Missoni Jacket. “This entire outfit cost me $20,” he said. “I like shopping thrift stores because it’s green, it’s a green way of living,” he said.

Shoppers never know what they’ll find. On this day at The Cathedral of Saint Philip Thrift Store there were designer labels like Armani, Ferragamo, Stuart Weitzman, Brooks Brothers, Nannette Lepore and others. Most were under $20 and many were under $10.

Thrift stores are different from consignments stores because most of the items are donated. At consignment stores the original owner gets a percentage of the sale price. Many consignment stores specialize in high end designer items while thrift stores have a bit of everything. “You have to have patience. I go through every rack and look for designer labels,” said Troppy.

Many thrift stores do not have fitting rooms and most don’t take returns.

Among Daniel Troppy’s favorites are:

Attic Treasures Thrift Shop, 3534 Broad St, Atlanta GA 30341 (770) 451-6933

The Cathedral of St. Philip Thrift Shop, 1837 Piedmont Avenue NE, Atlanta GA 30324 (404) 876-5440

Nearly New Shop 1715 Howell Mill Rd NW Atlanta, GA 30318 (404) 355-3547

Marshall Field, Laundry & BCBG OH MY!!!!

This is the continued posting from yesterdays thrifting adventures with Umie except I’ll be showcasing my goods.  We drove over to  St. Vincent de Paul Thrift store which happens to be another favorite of mine and started shopping.  Umie spotted this gorgeous vintage Marshall Field & Company embroidered knit  jacket made in Austria.  Then as I was digging through the jacket rack I saw this ultra suede 2 piece number by BCBG Max Azria .  Max Azria is a French fashion designer  who began his career in Paris for 11 years before moving to Los Angeles in 1981.  Azria launched BCBGMAXAZRIA in 1989 and is named for the French phrase “bon chic, bon genre,” a Parisian slang meaning “good style, good attitude.”   I love the chocolate color and the stretch the fabric has to it, it’s fantastic I say…  Then moments later I scored another 2 piece number by Laundry Shelli Segal This black and white linen ensemble is the perfect outfit for a little cocktail party don’t you agree? I love finding stylish clothes for an affordable price and that’s what I always get when I shop at the St. Vincent de Paul thrift store.  Please take a second and follow me on Twitter, there is a link below my profile.    Toodles for now.  Daniel

Jil Sander + YSL Rive Gauche

Today was an action packed day for Umie and  myself as we really pillaged the hell out of two thrift stores.  We did so much damage that I could literally blog about it for 3 weeks.  I am just going to spotlight just three lovely items now and continue tomorrow.  I first found the Jil Sander wool jacket, handed it over to Umie to see if she wanted to try it on, like who wouldn’t want to try this jacket on right????  She smiled all the way to the dressing room and then as I was going through the rack of slacks spotted these gorgeous black wool Jil Sander  and as Umie’s luck would have it was her size….it’s like double coupon day!!!   As if getting a Jil Sander outfit wasn’t enough today as I moved through the skirt section came across this gorgeous gray Yves Saint Laurent Rive Gauche skirt and was marked at $3.00. Umie found the most amazing cashmere black sweater made by Maria di Ripabianca made in Italy for Sloan.  When we walked out of there Umie had spent $31. Tomorrow I’ll tell you what I got from the other thrift store.  Toodles for now.  Daniel

Wassily chair ????

I am a huge collector of chairs as anyone of my friends would acknowledge. The Wassily chair is not in my collection.
I have tried for years to find an original one but always come up with knockoffs. The Wassily chair was designed by
Marcel Breuer in 1925-26 in Germany and was first manufactured by Thonet, the German Austrian furniture manufacturer
most known for its bent wood chair designs. The chair was revolutionary in the use of the materials (bent steel
and canvas) . A design classic it is still available today though patent designs have expired from Thonet, the trademark
name rights to the design are owned by Knoll and each piece is stamped with the KnollStudio logo and the designers
signature. So when I saw these 2 lovely chairs at the thrift store the other day I quickly turned the chair upside down to check
for manufacture label, and there wasn’t one. The originals ones have cowhide leather slings and these were
some funky faux leather wannabe material. They were priced at $25 each and I know that’s such a steal for this
chair but since these were yet again knockoffs I just snapped the photo and kept walking, hoping that one day soon I
will score an original Wassily chair. Toodles for now. Daniel

One day it was Donna Karen the next Giorgio Armani.

You can only imagine my delight when the next day I snagged myself a Giorgio Armani 2 piece dress suit. Like a fool I passed up buying the Donna Karen 2 piece dress suit and when I went back to see if it was there of course it was gone but in its place was Armani. Grant it this piece is vintage this season Spring/Summer 2010 Armani creates a collection of pieces empowered by their cut and construction, essentially disciplined but at the same time possessing that special equilibrium achieved through perfectly balanced contrasts – exuberant, head turning, sumptuous. Looking at this vintage 2 piece suit is easy to see how his vision hasn’t changed much. This suit I did not let slip through my fingers, I paid $5.25. The lesson I learned here is not to let really good things slip by you, wake up – stay focused and enjoy. Toodles for now. Daniel

Donna Karen 2 piece dress suit.

Flipping through the women’s jacket section at my local thrift store I came upon this carmel color Donna Karen jacket and with a little extra surprise underneath the jacket was a matching skirt. Donna Karen founded her company in 1984 with her late husband Stephen Weiss, which went on to be come a publicly traded enterprise in 1996. Five years later was acquired by its present owner, the French luxury conglomerate, LVMH, Moet Hennessy Louis Vuitton. The construction of this jacket is so modern with the tied belt at the waist and flare cuffs. The matching skirt was pretty sophisticated as well as form fitting and one can only imagine what this might look like on some woman rushing from her office to some partie de cocktail. Lovely is the only word I can choose. This ensemble was priced at $5.25, I know your mouth just dropped- I understand completely. Toodles for now. Daniel

Hugo Boss + Prada shoes.

I love finding good shoes especially when they are Hugo Boss and Prada and did I mention they both were $5.00 each???? Did I mention that? I saw they both were my size and since I didn’t try them on inside the thrift store I just took a chance they would fit. For $5.00, even in this recession we are in, if they don’t fit I’ll re gift them back to the thrift store! When I got them home I immediately pulled out my antibacterial moist wipes and got busy. I use one tissue per foot and really get inside and swab every itch starting with the toes, working my tissue backwards and then the vamp of the shoe. I always recommend taking antibacterial wipes with you when you thrifting, especially if you are planning on trying on shoes and if all else fails always wear socks! After the cleansing session I broke out the Kiwi shoe polish and buffer and now they look brand new. The Hugo Boss shoes retail would cost $125-150 and the Prada would run about $400-425. My $10 investment paid off handsomely and now I’m ready to parade them all about town. Toodles for now. Daniel

The gods were sending me Missoni all day.

Today was extremely rare because not only did I find a gorgeous Missoni shirt but also a Missoni blazer, both just happen to be brand NEW…. When I held up the first find, which was the shirt, I almost wet myself but then when I scored the blazer , there just might have been some leakage ! What are the chances of finding just one Missoni items at a thrift store more of less two? I believe the gods were sending me love vibrations today. The shirt was priced at $5.00 as well as the blazer so for 10 bucks I have myself one very fashionable ensemble. Toodles for now. Daniel

Carolina Herrera and the golden Gucci shoes.

I reconnected with my friend Sue the other day after not seeing her for years. We have that really unique friendship where if we don’t see each other for years, when we do it’s as if it was only yesterday. I love that kind of friendship, there aren’t any requirements put on it, it’s just organic. I could blabber all day about Sue but let me tell you all about this gorgeous Carolina Herrera that WAS hanging in her closet. Was being the operative word here because she asked me if I could drop off this little number with the golden Gucci slippers at a consignment store she works with. Did I mention that Sue is incredibly eco friendly? By consigning her clothes she is giving it a second chance at life ! She is giving someone else the opportunity to make a memory by wearing that dress and shoes to some special occasion. Don’t get me wrong here you know how much I love my thrift stores but when the time comes for a truly special affair don’t forget about the consignment stores. Toodles for now. Daniel

Lacoste + Lacoste nothing like a French icon.

One day Italy was in the air the next day it was France. Occasionally I will see Lacoste but 2 in one day hit me over the head with a baguette! Rene Lacoste founded the company in 1933 and began to produce the revolutionary tennis shirt Lacoste had designed and worn on the tennis court with the crocodile logo embroidered on the chest. In 1952, the shirts were exported to the US and advertised as “the status symbol of the competent sportsman,” influencing the clothing choices of the upper class. The crocodile logo has become synonymous with the French culture. For $9.58 I purchased both classic shirts and skipped out the thrift store. At Neiman Marcus EACH one will cost you $80 . Ok so yesterday I enjoyed myself an espresso, today I’m thinking a croissant? I really should have had them together don’t you think? Toodles for now. Daniel

Zegna + Zanella it's all about the Z's.

I love being surrounded by Italian labels and on this particular day it was a feast. I found both of these gorgeous shirts at the same thrift store and when I picked up the second Italian shirt I knew I was meant to blog about the Z’s. The first one I found was the Ermenegildo Zegna high style dress shirt priced at $6.29. This shirt would retail at Neiman Marcus for $325. Zegna founded the company in 1910 and quickly gained a reputation for producing fine quality wool suits. Minutes later I found this chocolate brown Zanella shirt. Understated elegance at it’s best Zanella clothes are widlely regarded as the world’s best. Luxurious Zanella clothes are expertly crafted by skilled Italian tailors of the finest Italian fabrics. Italy was in the air today. It was priced at $3.29 so both Italian shirts combined cost me under $10. When I left the thrift store I had a real urge for a espresso! Toodles for now. Daniel

Louis Vuitton duffle bag for my birthday !

Today’s is my birthday and if you have a birthday anywhere near a major holiday like Christmas God Bless Your Heart is all I can say. There is so much pressure and angst this time of the year and top it off with a birthday, it’s a recipe for disaster. I just woke up and Mitch showered me with birthday presents and the best one was this Louis Vuitton duffle bag he scored for me at Career Fashion Consignment . Mitch found this bag for me for a fraction of the retail price and knowing how much I LOVE a bargain purchased this as a birthday gift. Nice is all I can say! It’s looking like it just might be a fantastic day afterall. Maybe to some degree the anxiety decreases each year but with a gift like this I say bring it on !!! Toodles for now. Daniel

Tom Ford and A Single Man.

Last night I dragged Mitch to the theater to see A Single Man directed by Tom Ford. It was one of the most stunning films I have seen in a long time. You could stop each frame of the film and it would be a fabulous piece of art. I knew going into the movie that Tom Ford had directed this film, so my expectations were set high. He did not disappoint ! I think everything he touches turns to gold, take for instance Gucci, when he took over he single handedly save that fashion empire and created ultra chic clothes that became sought after among everyone in the world. There is another reason I believe TF is so fabulous it’s because he from Texas. Just my opinion, I happen to think Austin Texas is one of the best cities in the country, if you haven’t been you MUST go. Over the years I have collected lots of Gucci items from the thrift stores but nothing yet from Tom Ford, which is now my mission. My prediction is that A Single Man wins best picture of the year.
