Bebe & Mary McFadden can put a smile on a botanist face.

Little did I know that when I went thrifting today I would find 2 dresses that had one theme in common: nature.  The first dress I found was Bebe,  size medium and made of rayon,  it has a rose pattern on a black background.  Now how elegant is that?  The second dress I found was the Mary McFadden which I’m calling a ‘jungle’ print because of the huge elephant ears and palm leaves print.  This dress just screams out “SUMMER” and doesn’t it make you want to go to Costa Rica for a 2 week vacation to see the rain forest?  To me this is the brilliance of Mary McFadden’s creations, her designs encourage the mind to wonder.  In 1973, Mary McFadden presented to the public, her first designs which were based on African and Asian fabrics.  This attracted a great deal of attention. She formed her own company in 1976 and gained a reputation as a designer of individual, original jackets, coats and dresses based on peasant designs of the Middle East and Asia.  I think these Marc Jacobs black leather heels have the right organic look,  that both dresses could wear these boots and would be elevated to a whole new unworldly realm.  Check out The Thrifters Boutique and follow me on Twitter & Facebook, also please check out and share my YouTube videos on thrifting.  Toodles for now.   Daniel

Kal Kaur Rai wrap dress and David Meister black cocktail dress.

The abstract flower pattern reminds me of something Jackson Pollack would be so proud of on this Kal Kaur Rai chocolate wrap dress size small / medium.  Kal Kaur Rai, who was once to nervous to mention it to her parents that she had ventured into fashion business, has won the Young Achiever category at the Asian Business Awards.  Today the London designer, whose clients include Victoria Beckham, Cat Deeley and Beyonce, is reaping the rewards of her ambition.  Rai now supplies her collections aimed at women aged 18 to 30 to more than 70 retailers, not bad for a 34 year old designer.  This wrap dress is like wearing a piece of abstract art it’s just beautiful,  timeless and appropriate for any age.  The next dress I found is a bit on the fancy cocktail side of life, this sleeveless David Meister size 12, is red carpet worthy.  As a young child growing up in Cincinnati, David was heavily influenced by style conscious TV shows like the Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour, which fueled his aspiration of becoming a fashion designer.  During his formative years, David sketched evening wear designs which laid the foundation for what was to come.  Looking at the section of clothing from the Neiman Marcus link its easy to see that he was meant to create and become a fashion designer.  Somethings are just in the stars.  David’s passion began early in his life but it’s that passion that we all have deep down inside each of us.  Thank the GODS above that David didn’t give up on his dream and you don’t either.  Stop by The Thrifters Boutique and follow me on Twitter & Facebook, also please enjoy my YouTube videos on thrifting.   Toodles for now.   Daniel

Laundry by Shelli Segal chocolate blouse with modern jacket by Whistles how very stylish is that?

Both items have one ingredient that I love in fabric and that is spandex.  You will see lycra also listed many times on tags but it is just a type of spandex , it’s just a brand name.   Lycra is the registered trademark owned by the Dupont Company.  The chocolate Laundry by Shelli Segal blouse size medium has some rayon and spandex, which helps contour the structure of the body nicely.  Hell if I could wrap my whole body up in some spandex it would be a great day.  I found this gorgeous jacket by Whistles London size 10 that has some wool and lycra.  Again with the stretchy stretch !  Whistles is a cutting edge, womenswear fashion brand, recently reinvented and fast becoming one of the favorite must have labels amoung the fashion set.  Now under the helm of retail visionary, Jane Shepherdson, Whistles has been transformed.  The brand has now earned a reputation for creating the perfect trouser, must have dresses as well as the most luxurious knitwear.  Under its new direction, Whistles is beginning to reclaim its roots, as an independent, stylish and uber cool boutique.  Founded by Lucille Lewin in 1976, its first store pioneered many new labels and designers in London for the first time, launching John Galliano,  Dries van Noten and Jean Paul Gaultier to name but a few.  I would love to see these Adidas Y-3 by Yohji Yamamoto leggings with this top and jacket.  Check out The Thrifters Boutique and follow me on Twitter & Facebook, also please watch and comment my YouTube videos on thrifting.  Toodles for now.  Daniel

Betsey Johnson slip dress with Jenne Maag jacket can make you feel like a super star.

I don’t know why but each time I find a Betsey Johnson item in the thrift stores I have to smile, there is something about BJ that I really love.  As one journalist recently quoted, “If Betsey Johnson didn’t exist, we would have to invent her, simply to remind ourselves that fashion can be fun.  She’s the original wild child and set to paint the town, PINK!”  In 1978, Johnson started her own fashion line.  While her first collection was a success, her second one bombed, leaving Johnson with 3,000 pieces of Spring clothing and insufficient funds to stage a fashion show to attempt to sell them.  In response, Johnson opened a retail store in SOHO and today she now has over 45 stores worldwide.  I love that she didn’t give up, she’s tenacious and I guess it’s that fighting spirit that I admire.  I found this striped Jenne Maag jacket that I put together with the BJ slip dress.  I don’t find a lot of Jenne Maag clothing at thrift stores these days but it’s always a treat when I do.  Jenne Maag’s success has been in her understanding of the flattering powers and subtleties of stretch fabric.  Having been one of the first to have worked with Italy’s top stretch textile companies, she has researched and developed the highest quality available.  Honestly I have no idea who carries her line these days,  in the past Bergdorf Goodman represented her but no longer.  When you see Jenne Maag at the thrift stores grab it, I promise you will treasure it.  Don’t forget to shop The Thrifters Boutique and follow me on Twitter and Facebook, also please check out my YouTube videos on thrifting.  Toodles for now.  Daniel

SKY David Park & Alexia Admor dresses.

When I held the SKY David Park khaki dress size small up to show Umie you could see her mouth salivate.  I told her that I had recently found another of his dresses which I had recently blogged about.   All I know about David Park is that he is a young talent based in Los Angeles and that’s about it.  When I got home to research more about him I couldn’t find his website I had previously used in my link, so I have no idea what’s up with David Park all I know is with this much talent it would be a total waste to let this slip from our fingers.  I absolutely love both dresses I have found by this creative designer and surely hope he is not going away.  The second dress I found was this chocolate Alexia Admor size small and made of spandex.  Alexia Admor was founded in 1989 and is situated in the heart of Manhattan’s fashion district.   The hallmark of Alexia Admor, a contemporary women’s dress line, is defying the notion that sweet and sexy can not coexist.  In the contemporary women’s market, striking this delicate balance is evidently uncommon.  In spite of this, Alexia Admor fuses expressions of the sweet, the sexy, the girly, and the fun into one cohesive message: that the girl with a daunting social agenda can have a wardrobe to match her attitude and lifestyle.  I think these ivory Giuseppe Zanotti high heel platform sandals made in Italy would look super sassy on both dresses, now if only I could find these at my local thrift store my life would be copacetic.  Stop by The Thrifters Boutique and follow me on Twitter & Facebook, also please enjoy my YouTube videos on thrifting.  Toodles for now.  Daniel

Laundry by Shelli Segal pink top & BCBG beaded halter top with black Armani Exchange slip skirt.

The color pink is named after the flowers called ‘pinks’, flowering plants in the genus Dianthus.  The name derives from the frilled edge of the flowers and dates back to the 14th century.  In Western culture, the practice of assigning pink to an individual gender began in the 1920′s.  From then until the 1940′s, pink was considered appropriate for boys because being related to red it was the more masculine and decided color, while blue was considered appropriate for girls because it was the more delicate and dainty color.  Christo and Jeanne Claude’s Surrounded Islands wrapped wooded islands in Miami’s Biscayne Bay with 6,500,000 square feet of bright pink fabric.  Ok so that was a very long way around what I need to be talking about but it does relate to the pink tube top by Laundry by Shelli Segal size M/L I found at the thrift store.  I also found this BCBG beaded abstract floral print halter top size small that I think is pretty spectacular.  Both tops look FABULOSO with the brand new Armani Exchange black slip skirt size small that still had the original price tag of $86.00 just dangling in the wind.  A/X Armani Exchange was launched in 1991 in the US, and is one of the leading fashion brands in the world today and when you see how both tops really change the dynamics of the skirt you understand Armani’s brilliance.  Don’t forget to shop The Thrifters Boutique and follow me on Twitter & Facebook, also please enjoy my YouTube videos on thrifting.  Toodles for now.   Daniel

Sonia Fortuna gorgeous top with Ellen Tracy slacks and a vintage Italian linen Oscar de la Renta jacket.

The second I spotted this Sonia Fortuna top I knew it was special.  The front, back, sides and sleeves are like a painting and that is what this brand is known for.  Sonia Fortuna in Florence Italy manufactures high quality womens wear and is now assessing itself as an important name in the world of women’s wear.  I think this top would look fantastic with tight jeans, black leggings or even a pair of cotton and spandex size 10 Ellen Tracy khakis as shown in photo.  I think if you needed something extra to really pull it together and take you from casual to evening I think this vintage Oscar de la Renta made in Italy linen jacket is the answer.   Today Oscar de la Renta is one of the leading design houses in the world.  The company has seen an influx of great young talent, as it continues to grow and expand as a global brand.  This vintage de la Renta jacket has slanted front pockets that just add to the punch, making the Fortuna top even more contemporary.  I love the juxtaposition of the abstract modern top with the vintage jacket to me it resonates sophistication.  When wearing this ensemble you would say to the world ‘I embrace transformation’ and to me that just states you roll with the changing times and that’s classy.  Check out The Thrifters Boutique and follow me on Twitter & Facebook, also please enjoy my YouTube videos on thrifting.   Toodles for now.  Daniel

On the count of 3 say Akris, Ralph Lauren and vintage Obnibene Zendman then say cheese.

2 out 3 skirts were brand new and all were from the same thrift store so I believe something was in the air or water.
The other day in my posting I had written about finding a Akris jacket that was brand new,  well when I went back to the thrift store I found the matching skirt.  Those kind of odds aren’t even in Vegas.  I found the matching Akris brand new size 10 skirt that will now go with the jacket.  Akris dresses women who, irrespective of their age or nationality, expect the best from their clothing.  They are self confident and stylish, appreciate quality and understated clothing and see fashion as the new Zeitgeist.  The Akris woman is reservedly sexy, her charisma is never superficial and she never compromises on quality.  The second brand new skirt I found was Ralph Lauren made of silk & spandex size 12 and the price tag of $129.00 was still on it.  The third was the vintage piece by Obnibene Zendman khaki green wool skirt size 10 and made in Rome Italy.  Ognibene Zendman was a fashion house that designed simple and clean creations that was founded in 1965.  The label was quite expensive, high end ready to wear sold at Bergdorf Goodman, Saks & Neiman Marcus.  In a 1986 article Ognibene Zendman prices averaged $650 for a wool day dress to a top price of $6,000 for an evening ensemble.  Zendman is the American born partner behind the Ognibene Zendman label, who worked under the late Balenciaga.  With pedigree like that I will consider myself lucky to have rescued this skirt from the thrift store.  Check out The Thrifters Boutique and follow me on Twitter & Facebook, also check out my YouTube videos on thrifting.  Toodles for now.  Daniel

Laundry by Shelli Segal tank & Michael Stars tee under a Isaac Mizrahi plaid jacket.

I found 2 sassy tops and 1 super light weight Summer plaid jacket all within 1 thrift store just how lucky am I?  Really lucky.  The first thing I pulled from the clutches of a packed rack of clothes was the Laundry by Shelli Segal tank top size small.  The tank if made of rayon and nylon so you know this tank will lovingly hug every curve, which is always a good thing.  The second top I squeezed from the rack was the Michael Stars magenta tee, if you don’t already own any Michael Stars t-shirts then what in the hell are you waiting for?  When I found this Isaac Mizrahi plaid super light weight Summer jacket size 2,  I knew the 2 tops I previously pillaged would look stylish together.  I love the construction of this jacket it reminds me of something Doris Day would have worn in one of her many movies.  It has that retro look,  yet it’s clean simple and modern.  The jacket and tops would look fantastic with these True Religion grey legging.  Well on that note I think I’ll do a Doris Day Que Sera Sera number and call it a day.  Stop by The Thrifters Boutique and follow me on Twitter & Facebook, also please enjoy my YouTube videos on thrifting.  Toodles for now.  Daniel

SKY by David Park retro dress and St John heels could do some damage.

I am such a sucker for anything retro and when I saw this pattern it just reminded me of a Victor Vasarely print.   Internationally recognized as one of the most important artists of the 20th century Vasarely is the acknowledged leader of the Op Art movement, and his innovations in color and optical illusion have had a strong influence on many modern artist.  Ok getting back to this SKY by David Park retro dress David began his career in 1995 with no formal training.  He realized that he had a real passion for design and started his first clothing line called SKY in 1996.   David continues his success launching his signature line, appropriately named DavidPark at L.A’s first fashion week.  His uncompromising attention to detail, beautiful lines and rich fabrics, awarded him best in show.  I found these gorgeous St John heels that I think would look ultra fabulous and chic with this dress.  Since 1962, St John has been renowned for creating elegant, versatile designs of impeccable quality.  I think the gold trim on the heels really compliment the color palette of the dress.  Plus wearing a little gold is always fashionable, key word here a little gold….  Shop at The Thrifters Boutique and follow me on Twitter & Facebook, also enjoy my YouTube videos on thrifting.  Toodles for now.   Daniel

ABS by Allen Schwartz top with Eileen Fisher skirt and Ellen Tracy shoes.

This spaghetti string top size medium with beaded straps by Allen Schwartz is a throwback to the good old 60′s.  You know Janis Joplin would have worn this top at one of her concerts no doubt.   Spaced throughout the top are hand sewn sequins that add a little more rock n’ roll.   I like this long black white and gray linen with cotton skirt by Eileen Fisher.  25 years ago, Eileen Fisher for a very personal reason : she was having trouble getting dressed started her brand.  At the time she was working as an interior and graphic designer.  In her mind she kept seeing simple shapes for clothes and knew they had to be beautiful colors, great fabrics and have certain shapes and proportions that worked together.  Although she couldn’t sew and only had $350 in the bank, she believed in these simple shapes and had 4 designed created to take them to The Boutique Show in New York.  The rest is all history now with 800 employees strong and with 44 stores in 14 states she is making woman look and feel self assured.  I found these Ellen Tracy black leather heels that are in MINT condition that match the skirt and compliments the top.  Janis would wear this entire ensemble  she would just need her guitar, a bottle of vodka and lots of illegal substances and the rest would be history.  Make sure you stop by and say hello at The Thrifters Boutique and follow me on Twitter & Facebook, also please enjoy my YouTube videos on thrifting.  Toodles for now.  Daniel

Ralph Lauren silk Iris print blouse with vintage Oscar de la Renta jacket : gentlemen start your engines!!!

My dad was a farmer and now an avid gardener,  my brother Darrell is a master gardener, me on the other hand lets just say my thumb is a light shade of green.  I’m learning daily because I started a vegetable garden and have planted a ton of flowers  so you could say I’m really loving flowers at the moment.    That is the reason behind this exquisite silk Ralph Lauren Iris print blouse I snatched.  Ralph Lauren began 40 years ago with a collection of ties and has grown into an entire world, redefining American style.  Ralph Lauren has always stood for providing quality products, creating worlds and inviting people to take part in his dream.  I found this oh so Florence Henderson vintage rust color 100% wool, made in Italy, Oscar de la Renta jacket with tiny bamboo pieces as buttons.  This piece really blew me away, I absolutely love the cut of this jacket.  I took the Iris print blouse and matched it with the vintage de la Renta jacket because of the bamboo buttons, I’m putting nature among nature.  Flowers surrounded by grass it’s a botanist wet dream.  Who knows maybe my thumb is a lot greener than I originally thought.  Stop by The Thrifters Boutique and follow me on Twitter & Facebook, also please enjoy my YouTube videos on thrifting.  Toodles for now.  Daniel

Michael Kors paisley print blouse with Akris jacket is a win win!

It isn’t everyday that I find a brand new Akris jacket with the tag still on it, but when I do -  I do the Daniel Troppy victory dance.  If you ever see some crazy ass fool in some thrift store doing this dance you’ll know it’s me and that I have struck gold.  This gorgeous light weigh wool size 10 jacket is beautifully constructed.  The jacket carries the unmistakable signature of designer Albert Kriemier, who creates fashion for a feminine woman with personality and charisma.  He has unwaveringly adopted an independent and authentic way forward and his unique philosophy has helped the company gain worldwide prestige in recent years.  Albert Kriemler was just 20 years old when he joined his father’s company in 1980.  Albert states ” Akris gives resonance , amongst other qualities, to the demands and requirements born of the reality of everyday living, whilst retaining the luxury of a beautiful fabric, worked using traditional Couture processes.” This brand is a super sassy and chic and when I find anything Akris in a thrift store you can see why I do the victory dance….  I found this Michael Kors silk paisley print blouse that I think looks fantastic under the jacket.  Paisley in my opinion never goes out of style – it should be a basic print in anyone wardrobe.   Don’t forget to stop by and see all the items in The Thrifters Boutique and follow me on Twitter & Facebook, also please enjoy my YouTube videos on thrifting.  Toodles for now.   Daniel

One Dolce & Gabbana ensemble coming up…

Will the lady with the Dolce & Gabbana outfit please come to the front of the line, that’s what I’m hearing when I see my client wear this ensemble.  I went to 2 different thrift stores on the same day and pulled together this look.  The first item I found was the cotton floral pattern Dolce & Gabbana blouse.    I don’t know what told to to  hit another thrift store but I listen to my gut when it talks to me.   At the second thrift store is where I found these ultra cute and sassy capri pants size 6 that just happen to match the blouse I had previously pillaged.  What are the odds of finding 2 Dolce & Gabbana items in one day,  more or less within the same color palette,  that just happens to complete an entire outfit?  Come on what do you think those odds are?  I’m not a gambling kind of man here but I would have to wager that the odds aren’t on my side.  I can easily see these Moschino high heels taking this uniform from casual to chic in one wink.  It doesn’t always come together this easy for me, there is a hell of a lot of work involved in what I do, but on this occasion the GODS were smiling down on me and showering me with pink petals of love.  Check out The Thrifters Boutique and follow me on Twitter & Facebook, also please enjoy my YouTube videos on thrifting.  Toodles for now.  Daniel

Betsey Johnson and Allen Schwartz

I found 2 party dresses and I mean 2 kick some butt party dresses.  The first one I found was the Betsey Johnson silk dress with a gorgeous rose print and a size 4.  Betsey Johnson, both the woman and the label, is constantly moving forward and continues to keep a strong foothold in the fashion industry with no signs of letting up anytime soon.  Her love of detail and design is evident in everything she does in life and in business.  The second party your butt off dress was this A.B.S by Allen Schwartz black dress size 8.  After over 2 decades of designing for his moniker brand, A.B.S, Schwartz is even more passionate than ever about design and predicting the next trends.  As he directs the brand into the future, he applies a simple credo to his life and design….”It’s all about the here and now.”  That’s excellent advice because without the here and now what do you have embrace?  I say live your life as if you are always going to some party, some event or function and stand up straight – arch your back  and for god’s sake DRESS UP….  Stop by The Thrifters Boutique and follow me on Twitter & Facebook, also enjoy yourself to my YouTube videos on thrifting.  Toodles for now.  Daniel
