Aquascutum + Tod’s loafers.

If I were a junkie and got high just to get high,  all it would take would be to find the luxury brand Aquascutum and I would as stoned as a Grateful Dead groupie.  Aquascutum (from the Latin ‘Aqua’ -water and ‘scutum’ – shield) is so-called thanks to its founder, who invented a method of shower-proofing fabric in 1853.  A modern version of this process is applied to their trench coat fabrics today.  In the Spring / Summer 2005 Aquascutum’s first catwalk collection since the company’s inception 1851.  Designers Michael Herz and Graeme Fidler ‘sent out a sharp assured collection that was shot across the bows to Burberry’ according to the Evening Standard fashion editor Laura Craik.  I found this gorgeous blue size 15 1/2 dress shirt for $3.00, the retail value on this shirt is $200 + .  Moments later I snagged these BRAND NEW Tod’s women’s loafers size 6.5.  I first noticed the brand and then when I turned them over to check the sole I was flabbergasted.  These were new, not a speck of dirt on the sole

.  I said Daniel don’t question how they got here just hold on to them,  pay for them and run your butt to the car.  So I paid for my Aquascutum shirt and Tod’s loafers, which together cost $5.50 and was so incredibly high from that I think I floated all the way home. Burberry + Zegna shirts.

In one fabulous swoop I gathered up 2 Burberry shirts and 1 Ermenegildo Zegna all from one thrift store and all for under $13.00.  I always get excited with I find anything Burberry but I salivate over Zegna. In Hong Kong of October 2009 Ermenegildo Zegna unveils its first Global Concept Store, designed by Peter Marino, the architect of modern luxury.  These stores are the result of a fruitful partnership between the world-renowned architect Peter Marino and Zegna, with the architectural firm echoing the brands use of quality materials, integrity, and modern style in the store.  This just makes me want to go check out that store.  I’m thinking since I didn’t pay full retail or anything close to that, with all that money I have saved I could fly coach.  I think I would just go nuts in Hong Kong, I wonder if there are any thrift stores over there???  Please don’t forget to check out The Thrifters Boutique which is located top right of screen and follow me on Twitter & Facebook. Dior and Piazza Sempione.

When Sloan held up this vintage gorgeous, Christian Dior,  silver grey jacket and asked me what I thought of this creature I was blown away.  Who doesn’t love vintage Dior?  I told her to try it on to  see if it fits,  because if it does then she needed to have this.  Unfortunately it did not work for her but she loved the cut and construction of this jacket as I did.  If you have ever watched “The Real Housewhores of Atlanta” on Bravo,  Kim keeps saying “I’m going to die in DIOR”.  At least she does have enough taste to love and respect Dior.  Dior is now designed by John Galliano who is a British fashion designer known for his two labels Galliano and Dior.  He produces six couture and ready to wear collections a year, Galliano is also a favorite amoung celebrities wearing his dresses on the red carpet.  Speaking of red, I found these beautiful Piazza Sempione corduroy slacks size 40 Italian which is a size 6 USA but looks like a size 4.  If I have learned one thing about Piazza Sempione clothes you really do have to try them on because if they say size 6 they really are a size 4.  Named after a street in Milan, Piazza Sempione was founded by husband and wife Roberto Monti and Marisa Guerrizio in 1991.  Piazza Sempione was the street where the couple opened their first shop.  Every garment and accessory is entirely produced and distributed at the headquarters in Milan.  This ensemble needs some Christian Louboutin suede platform peep toe slingbacks to get this party started ! Turnbull & Asser and J. Lindeberg.

I can’t honestly tell you how many Turnbull & Asser dress shirts I have in my closet, lets just say it’s alot.  Turnbull & Asser is known the world over for its distinctive and classical English shirts and clothing.  Since 1885, Turnbull & Asser has served successive Princes of Wales, Sir Winston Churchill and countless other leaders and celebrities – even fictional characters such as James Bond.  This gorgeous stripped Sea Island Cotton Quality retails for hundreds of dollars and once you have put their shirts on, you understand why.  The next shirt I found was a brand name I had heard but couldn’t remember where or how I knew it.  J. Lindeberg of Stockholm is a Swedish clothing company marketed as a 21st century lifestyle brand. Currently J. Lindeberg is distributed in over 20 countries and available at flagship stores in New York, Los Angeles, Stockholm, Tokyo and Hong Kong.  Johan Lindeberg founded the brand is 1996.  Johan who previously had been the marketing director of Diesel resigned from his duties at the Italian denim brand, and decided that he wanted to create something of his own.  Then I remembered how I knew the brand,  I had been to Sweden awhile back and remember seeing that store.  J. Lindeberg clothes LOVE your body and are designed for the modern fashion slave.  I paid $5.00 for both shirts and as I’m typing this posting, you can see the big grin on my face.  Don’t forget to check out The Thrifters Boutique located on top right side of screen and follow me on Twitter & Facebook. Bebe and Calvin Klein cashmere.

I think this Bebe loose knit sweater / jacket is just what the style doctor ordered.  It’s so ultra thin and soft , it hugs the body while giving it that extra boost of style.  Bebe designs, develops and produces a distinctive line of contemporary women’s apparel and accessories, which it markets under the Bebe &  2Bebe.  Current chairwoman and founder Manny Mashouf opened the first Bebe Boutique in 1976 in San Francisco.  At that time, that time, 3 categories dominated the women’s wear market: junior, bridge and missy.  Having discovered a demographic that was neither junior nor bridge, Manny aimed to break the mold, offering this under represented population of stylish women inspirational, sexy fashion.  Minutes later as I was shopping in the sweater section I nabbed this gorgeous navy Calvin Klein cashmere sweater.  Calvin Klein is an American fashion icon and was founded in 1968, currently it is owned by Phillips-Van Heusen.  The current creative director for Calvin Klein collection for women is Brazilian born Francisco Costa who has already worked with Calvin Klein directly before the founder’s departure from the company.  Italo Zucchelli heads the designs for Calvin Klein collection for menswear.  All this little ensemble needs is a pair of Jil Sander slacks and a Chloe clutch and this girl is making a statement.  Classic, Chic and uber CHI-CHI.  Please don’t forget to check out The Thrifters Boutique if interested in purchasing these items and follow me on Twitter & Facebook.  Toodles for now.  Daniel

Ferragamo and Diane Von Furstenberg.

I scored these Ferragamo black wool slacks size 10 while thrifting in Atlanta with my friends Umie and Sloan, they were marked at $3.29.  After seeing the gold button on the hanger first, it made me curious as to who the marker was , so when I saw the label I was quite pleased.  Salvatore Ferragamo was a Florentine and Italian shoe designer.  He worked with many Hollywood stars in the 1920′s, before returning to Italy to found the eponymous company making unique hand made footwear. Film stars and celebrities continue to patronize his company, which has evolved into a luxury goods empire spanning the world.  The very second I had these slacks in my hands,  I knew exactly what blouse I would match this up with.  I had just recently pillaged every damn thrift store in Houston, and let me tell you one thing about the women in Houston, they can SHOP.  They are professional shoppers and once they have gotten what they feel is adequate wear of their clothes,  they donate.  Texans are one of the most generous breeds of people,  making Texas like no other country I know !  It was the Diane Von Furstenberg white blouse I had just purchased in Texas for $2.00.  Diane von Furstenberg first arrived in the fashion world in 1972 with her iconic wrap dress (which by the way I have never seen at a thrift store but always look for it), the seed of what is today a full fashion house.  In 1997, after a hiatus from fashion, Diane reemerged on the New York fashion scene with the re-launch of the dress that had started it all and began transforming her company into the global luxury lifestyle brand it is today.  So being patient I was able to construct this ensemble, a little piece from Atlanta with a little something from Houston, VOILA gorgeous  & classic !  Plus the entire ensemble cost me $5.29 so how can you go wrong with that?  Don’t forget to follow me on Twitter and Facebook and defiantly don’t forget The Thrifers Boutique located on top right of screen. Modern crystal candle holders from Italy.

If you don’t already know this about me by now let me repeat this – I love Italy.  There are just countless fashion and furniture designers as well as architects from Italy , that I just think are brilliant beyond words.  So when I was out thrifting and ran across these gorgeous modern crystal candle holders, I was very pleased that the label underneath said “made in Italy.”  I can’t begin to tell you just how large my grin was nor can I tell you what I paid for them, it would be a crime to do that.  The thing I most LOVE about thrifting is the uncertainty of it all, the simple fact that I never know what I might come across.  The thing I can’t seem to say enough is “you just have to keep thrifting”,

each day is a new beginning.  I look forward to that day I can actually thrift in ItalyPlease don’t forget to check out The Thrifters Boutique located at the top right hand sideToodles for now. Daniel

My Kiton shirt + Cartier briefcase that got away.

A friend of mine recently asked me what was one of my favorite things  I once owned and then sold.  I said there are two things I owned and regrettably sold, a Kiton shirt and a Cartier briefcase.  I will never forget,  I was thrifting with my old friend Nathan,  when I found a Kiton  shirt.  I was so excited I couldn’t speak to Nathan, I kept saying “this is big, really big, huge, really huge…” I couldn’t speak.  Ciro Paone was born in Naples to a family that dealt in fabrics for five generations.  Kiton brand was born in 1968 and the name comes out from “chitone”, the ceremonial tunic the ancient Greek used to wear when praying on the Olympus.  The retail price for my shirt was $450.00.  The other was my lovely Cartier briefcase with it’s gorgeous burgundy leather, in pristine condition.  Talk about almost falling out when I saw that label.  I had Cartier in my hands for a brief moment in time, just like the Kiton shirt.  At the time in my life I needed some c$sh so I decided to pop them on ebay.  Looking back at that now, I’ve spent the money I made and said goodbye to two fabulous finds.  I would like to think that I will see them both again when I’m out thrifting, hopefully sooner rather than later.  Please don’t forget to check out my Thrifters Boutique, not for these items but for others, it’s located at top right hand side.  Toodles for now.  Daniel

See by Chloe meet Valentino for lunch or dinner.

This is my second Chloe find of my lifetime and it was just as sweet as my first.  See by Chloe has become the hip girl’s answer to idiosyncratic cool.  See by Chloe is more youthful and casual than the house’s main line, but still manages to retain the ultra feminine personality and rock n roll chic that Chloe-ophiles have come to know and love.  Created in 2001 to give customers more options than the 10 or so casual pieces in the luxe collection.  See by Chloe glams up even the most basic everyday looks.  The construction of these slacks are everlasting, enduring and classic so what better than a vintage Valentino polka dot silk blouse to give these an extra boost.  Did you know that Valentino designed the wedding dress for Jackie O ?  Valentino announced his retirement in 2007.  Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pier Paolo Piccioli, who had previously designed accessories for the label, were then named creative directors.  Any woman who wears this ensemble would go from office to dinner and then maybe a slow dance,  with the assurance of making one or two heads turn.  Please don’t forget to check out The Thrifters Boutique on top right corner of screen and follow me on Twitter + Facebook. Yamamoto + Jil Sander t-shirts.

Movie 39

I love finding a really good t-shirt. My most recent find was this Y-3 Yohji Yamamoto for Adidas priced at $1.00. Yamamoto is known for an avant-garde spirit in his clothing, frequently creating designs far removed from current trends. He is one of my favorite Japanese designers, always cutting edge and scrumptious. When I found this t-shirt it reminded me of another absolutely fabulous tee I had found awhile back, my Jil Sander. Both t-shirts I paid $1.00 for and both provide me with enough happiness to last a lifetime. Next time you’re out thrifting make sure you don’t pass up the t-shirt section, if I would have I wouldn’t have scored me a Yamamoto + Sander. Giorgio Armani with a splash of Valentino.

Who doesn’t love the thrill of finding Giorgio Armani at the thrift store?  My mind draws a big fat blank because everyone with a single cell of taste knows and admires Armani.  This season Giorgio Armani creates a collection of pieces empowered by their cut and construction, essentially disciplined but at the same time possessing that special equilibrium achieved through perfect balanced contrasts.  Season to season Armani reconfigures without sloppiness or fluttery detail, which brings to mind an eccentric purity derived directly from the Bauhaus.  The reason buyers keep coming back to Armani is the simple fact of consistency.  You can take out from you closet a vintage pair of Armani wool slacks and put them with something new  and the entire look becomes fresh again.  He is the master of creating timeless elegance.  Speaking of something timeless I love this Valentino silk paisley print blouse.  Did you know that the origin of paisley dates back to early 19th century, named after the town Paisley Scotland, the original place of manufacture.  I love finding great timeless items especially luxury brands.  I paid $6.00 for both items and they would look spectacular as an ensemble or separately, either way you look at it, it’s timeless.  To complete this ensemble I would LOVE to find these  Roger Vivier high heels at the thrift store.  If I found those shoes I really would know the GODS love me, instead of always teasing me.  Don’t forget to check out The Thrifters Boutique located on top right side of screen and follow me on Twitter + Facebook. Mary McFadden 2 piece.

Ok when was the last time you heard the name Mary McFadden?  For me it’s been to long to count, but I have to say I was pleased that I found this 2 piece dress.  When I gathered up this dress it made me think of the time, about 15 years ago, when I found a pair of womens Mary McFadden sunglasses.  They looked like something Roy Orbison would have worn, they were so big and stylish.  I gave them to my mom which by the way she still wears and loves.  With an artist’s sensitivity to color, harmony, and proportion, Mary McFadden successfully designed original clothing for nearly 20 years.  Her distinctive garments reflect an avid study of ancient and ethnic cultures.  When VOGUE featured McFadden’s simple tunics made of African prints and Oriental silks, clothes she had fashioned for herself out of necessity during her years spent in Africa, the effect created sensation.  When I photographed this outfit you’ll  notice I didn’t put the 2 pieces together,

that’s because I would style this separately.  I would have my client wear the top, with a pair of stiletto heel shoe boots by LanvinIf I had to style my client using the skirt then I would put this gorgeous Fendi blouse together. Now I would only pray that I could find the Lanvin & Fendi at some thrift store.  This 2 piece Mary McFadden cost me $6.29. Michael Kors and a little Max Mara.

I still can’t believe I paid $2.29 for a pair of Max Mara black wool slacks size 4.  In 1951 Achille Maramotti decided to dedicate himself to haute couture.  The very first collection, a camel coat and a geranium red suit, incorporated the ideals of future production: essential and precise, clean cuts and decisive lines.  French inspired designs, but reinvented through the lens of tradional Italian style.  While I was holding on to these slacks my eyes catch the “glimmer” of this Michael Kors faux onyx gemstones sewn onto the collar -

blouse.  Kors was born Karl Anderson Jr in New York.  In 1981 Kors launched the Michael Kors womenswear line at Bloomingdales, Bergdorf Goodman, Neiman Marcus and Saks. Building on his success, Kors was named the first ever women’s ready to wear designer and creative director for the French fashion house Celine in 1997.  In 2003 he left Celine to focus on his own brand, Kors had the year earlier launched his menswear line.  For $7.29 I had a complete gorgeous outfit, ready to go from office to dinning at a 5 star restaurant from zero to 60 mph.  I love when things just come together  without a fuss, don’t you?  Please don’t forget to check out The Thrifters Boutique located at the top right side of screen, it’s where you can do a little much needed shopping, follow me on Twitter & Facebook.
