For a second I thought I had myself an Arco lamp.

Several years ago I was driving down the street and saw, on the sidewalk, what appeared to be an Arco floor lamp. I turned my car around so fast you would have thought I was Mario Andretti. It turned out not to be an Arco lamp ( designed by Achille Castiglioni and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni) but non the less a pretty spectacular floor lamp. This lamp was just sitting on sidewalk waiting for the trash collectors to take it off to the landfill. The lamp comes apart in three pieces and I noticed a little blue label on the base near the black marble that said “made in Italy” as I was disassembling. The marble base must weigh 70 pounds but I hurled that lamp sculpture into my car and drove home as fast as I could. I made a nice home for that lamp for years and when I moved to our new house took it with us, you can never have enough lighting. Over the weekend we realized we just don’t have enough floor space so up into our attic it went, all 70 pounds of it. To this day I’m always blown away by what I see people throwing away and 10 out of 10 times I will stop to investigate. I don’t mind digging in someone trash or stopping in the middle of the street to grab a gorgeous floor lamp, even if it’s not an Arco lamp. Toodles for now. Daniel

There's a reproduction of this lamp in a clothing store here in Canberra and I've always admired it, ever since the moment I turned around briskly and copped a face-full of the shade!I wonder if I'll be able to find one on the side of the road like you did? I really like the design, but not enough to fork out for a new reproduction, those are still a couple of thousand.Xx
Great info Grant thanks for sharing your story. I wish you luck trying to find that lamp on the streets.
