VeArt lighting sconce by Gismondi.

What lovely lighting fixture did I find, you ask? I have to say I got lucky and found this VeArt designed by Ernesto Gismondi between 1993 and 2000. Gismondi was one of the original Artemide founders, which was started back in 1959, Sergio Mazza was the other founder. It’s from the Vesta Collection for VeArt by Artemide. This Vesta Collection was introduced in 1998 and sold for over $300.00 each. This brilliant design was alone and marked at $3.03, so of course I had to nab it. Nothing gives me greater pleasure than finding a good piece of Italian design except for some Godiva chocolates maybe. Got to keep shopping so Toodles for now. Daniel

Max Mara silk black dress slacks.

With the holidays coming up doesn’t every woman need a elegant pair of Max Mara silk dress slacks? I collected these gorgeous, size 8, slacks last week at a thrift store and paid $5.00. First of all I thought to myself who in their right mind could give these up and secondly who could pass them up???? Max Mara is an old Italian luxury brand that started in 1951 and is the epitome of artistry. It’s Monday so I’m getting ready to hit the thrift stores so watch out. Toodles for now. Daniel

Helen Welsh and a little leather goes a long way.

I nabbed this Helen Welsh shawl, made in Italy, earlier this week and paid $1.75. The blue with the chestnut brown in the shawl are so regal I just had to grab it. I don’t wear shawls now, but if I were to I would definitely consider this one! The boot cut leather pants, size 2, from the Gap I paid $5.00 for were also purchased earlier this week. Here I go again buying up women’s pants, Oy vey. It wasn’t until yesterday while out thrifting I found this brushed stainless modern pin for $3.00, that the outfit in my mind could now come together. All this outfit needs now is a fabulous blouse and a size 2 woman. Toodles for now. Daniel

I LOVE my new Vans literally !

I scored a brand new pair of Vans today at The Step Up Society Thrift Store for $2.75. Did I mention they are brand new? I can’t help but think of an old friend Scott Reilly who opened up the most spectacular design store Atlanta has ever seen called Retromodern. Scott loved Vans and collected them ferociously especially the black and white design patterns. I think I just might have to wear them out tonight with my Lagerfeld blazer. Toodles for now. Daniel

I ran into Paul Smith while cleaning out my coat closet.

Trying to recuperate after yesterday’s Black Friday shopping spree I decided to get up early this morning and clean out my coat closet. Who of all people did I come across when I was flipping though the closet, but Paul Smith. Paul Smith is a successful English fashion designer and one that I covet. I had totally forgotten about this linen jacket I scored last year and if my memory serves me correctly I paid $10 for. I remember squealing when I stumbled upon this linen jacket. There is absolutely not one thing wrong with this gorgeous jacket, no tears, stains, holes or smelly armpit odors. You just have to wonder how this piece ended up in some thrift store but thank god I was there to rescue it. Whoever donated this piece to the thrift store THANK YOU. Back to cleaning. Toodles for now. Daniel

Jil Sander khaki green slacks for $4.00 on Black Friday.

I started early today by hitting Value Village Thrift store down the street from my house and the only thing I scored was this fantastic Yves Saint Laurent dress shirt, my size and priced $5.29. Before I left my house I called Umie and said get ready I’m coming and we’re pillaging, she said “come on”. I was pulling out of Umie’s driveway when my friend Sloan called and I said “get your ass over to Attic Treasures Thrift Shop, Umie and I are heading over there right now”. Minutes later Sloan showed up and the 3 of us tore that thrift store up! From top to bottom, corner to corner, we left nothing unturned. At Attic Treasures today EVERYTHING was 1/2 off. EVERYTHING. Now that’s makes me get out of bed on Black Friday. Here is what I found for Umie, a gorgeous Christian Dior dress suit for $9.00 and a very dressy Bernard Zins slacks for $1.50. Umie found Giorgio Armani & Jil Sander slacks, both items did not fit her, so she handed Sloan the Jil Sander. What Umie did find that fit her to perfection was a Max Mara blazer marked down to $5.00. I found these gorgeous black velvet dress slacks by Jaeger and later Sloan found what looks like the matching black velvet Jaeger blazer! I also scored Sloan a pair of casual slacks by Vanilla made in Italy and this drop dead baby blue leather jacket also made in Italy marked at $10.00. Umie walked up to the counter carrying her 4 items and handed the woman a $20 bill and Sloan walked up carrying 6 items and handed the woman $30.00. Umie took home a Christian Dior suit, Bernard Zins slacks and Max Mara blazer plus 1 other item. Sloan took home a Jaeger pant suit, Jil Sander slacks, and a drop dead gorgeous leather jacket and 2 other items. This is how I spent my Black Friday, I went shopping with 2 friends and they ended up scoring big time, while I on the other hand just took home a YSL shirt. The 3 of us spent an enormous sum of $55 today and look at all we found. I hope everyone shopped smart today. Toodles for now. Daniel

Alice + Olivia I saw while thrifting.

The other day while out thrifting I came across these gorgeous Alice + Olivia denim jeans trimmed with leather, size 4 and priced at $5.00. I took two steps and ran across these Lacoste denim jeans, France size 36 which is a size 6 USA, again marked for $5.00. Alice + Olivia jeans would retail for $250 and up, Lacoste denim would retail for $135. Total retail price would easily be $385 while I paid $10.00. Now you might asked what am I doing buying women’s denim jeans and I have to honestly tell you I couldn’t pass it up. Plus this blog is about to get turned into a real website so once that happens I will open up “The Thrifters Boutique”. Today is Black Friday so it’s time for me to hit the stores, I’ll report back to you later. Toodles for now. Daniel

Thankful on Thanksgiving Day.

Happy Thanksgiving . I want to give thanks for all the great design objects I have been given, by all my wonderful friends, throughout my life.

* My friend Art gave me this Arne Jacobsen designed for Georg Jensen, cake knife. It looks like it could have been used for the movie “A Clockwork Orange”. Hands down a brilliant design.
* This remarkable book shelf Mitch gave me one year for Christmas, the Sapien Bookcase (2003) by Bruno Rainaldi, made in Italy wins the award for Best in Design. Everyone needs this book shelf.
* My brother Darrell for my birthday one year gave me the Magino Acrylic Stool / Magazine Rack designed by Karim Rashid and I love this very practical object. Thanks bro.
* Even though Gary didn’t give me this fabulous vintage Orrefors martini shaker, I can’t help but say thank you. Gary called me to tell me about an estate sale, which is where this piece came from, and if he hadn’t called, I wouldn’t have been so lucky and purchased this gorgeous glass piece.
* These two amazing books are from my dear friend Liz Lapidus, she picked up the Mapplethorpe in New York at an exhibition, and the Donald Judd when she went to Marfa Texas. I have read these books cover to cover.
* The Noguchi orange lamp was a Christmas present from two of the dearest people in my life Nena and Rhett. I absolutely love this lamp / sculpture and every time I see it, my love deepens.
I have two other Noguchi vintage lamps but they are in storage, this piece had to come to our new house.
* This stainless bowl from Alessi was a gift from my oldest college friend Jerry back in 1984 by Sean Falconieri. I have moved a million times since 1984 and this piece has always followed me. It’s timeless, stylish and so sophisticated.
* This Iittala designed by Alvar Aalto was given to me by my friend Gena, who knows so much about design. She was in Helsinki last year and purchased this just for me. Am I lucky or what?
* How can I forget the Roberto Collina shirt Umie gave me? Damn I love that shirt!
* My friend Jeanette, is a fabulous artist and professional thrifter like me, found me a 1970′s Lacoste tennis racket case at at thrift store for $3.00.
* Finally this candle was given to me by my ultra stylish friend Sloan. It’s made from 100% plant based non toxic organic wax. I wish you all could smell this candle, it’s just so clean and fresh. I only light this on special occasions such as when the day I found my Lagerfeld jacket!

Thank you friends for having divine taste and sharing it with me. I am the luckiest man in the world. Toodles for now. Daniel

Romeo Gigli with tags for $4, wake me up!

It was Mitch’s lucky day. I had it up to here with chores today and decided I just needed to see what was happening the day before Thanksgiving at the thrift stores. It was a very active day at the thrift stores today. I got a brand new Romeo Gigli shirt with the tag still on it for $4.00. I almost died when I saw the label, I have always LOVED this designer. My friend Sloan told me a story once, she walked into some department store, saw this gorgeous chartreuse dress by Gigli and just had to own it. I asked her “do you still wear this dress?” she replied “NOT ONCE”. In fact she can’t even remember where she put the damn dress, all she knows it’s somewhere in her closet. I tell her all the time “find the dress, put a hanger in the wall and hang that damn dress on your wall, it’s a piece of art”. I called her immediately and left her a message that said “Guess what’s I’m holding in my hand right now” and then hung up. When she returned my call her first word out of her mouth was Romeo. As I continued to shop I found Mitch a short sleeve blue Giani Feroti Italian shirt, Ungaro casual trousers, and finally two ties, Burberry & Gucci. I got to the counter to pay and couldn’t find my wallet, so I called Mitch and told him where I was and asked if he could please come and rescue me. Within minutes he arrived, handed me his credit card, I spent a grand total of $14.00 on Mitch’s Thanksgiving Day present! It’s the thought that counts isn’t it? Now that I think of it it was my lucky day too. Toodles for now. Daniel

Roberto Collina might just have to borrow Guy Laroche for a minute.

I’m not lying when I say that the gorgeous shirt Umie purchased for me while in New York, Roberto Collina is one of the best damn shirts I have ever tried on. It hugs my body like a Ferrari hugs the road. The Guy Laroche cashmere scarf she purchased for Mitch is uber R$CH. I’m thinking I just might have to borrow the Laroche scarf to wear with my Collina shirt tomorrow for Thanksgiving, after all you can never be to dressy for dinner. So today while I’m out making my thrift store runs I will be on the look out for another Roberto Collina shirt or if I’m really lucky trousers. Toodles for now. Daniel

Running into Blumarine and Pucci in New York.

While Umie was in New York she shopped, as you know from my previous posting, not only did she hit some thrift stores she attacked one major discount department store Century 21. She saw the most amazing Blumarine raspberry leather cashmere lined gloves, marked down from $169.00 to a discounted price of $69.95. Anna Molinari is the designer for Blumarine and she is one force to be reckon with. Then she spotted this ultra chic Pucci coat, the retail price was $8,190.00 marked all the way down to a whopping $2,199.97. Now if only the GODDESSES could point me in the direction of where that Pucci coat might be at a thrift store. She walked out of Century 21 purchasing only 3 items, Roberto Collina shirt for me, Guy Laroche cashmere scarf for Mitch and a Hugo Boss tie for her husband. Nothing for her, not even those raspberry Blumarine gloves which she now regrets. Tomorrow I will share with you one of the most fabulous designed shirts I have ever seen, the Roberto Collina shirt and of course the very stylish Guy Laroche scarf. Two phenomenal gifts from one amazing friend. Toodles for now. Daniel

Umie's thrifting adventures in New York.

Daniel,
I just sent you the photos that I took while shopping. I finally got them to send.
Before I went to New York, I used your blog to research the area. At the bottom of your blog page you listed a site called The Thrift Shopper, so I clicked on it and used that site to research thrift shops in New York City. I chose the ones that had high feedback scores and were in the area that were easy for me to access. Also, I did know of a discount retail store called Century 21 that I had visited about 10 years ago and wanted to go there again. I didn’t know if it was still in the same location since it was directly across the street from the World Trade Center when I went there last time, so I looked it up on the internet and found that they were still there.
Once I got the New York, I decided to set out on Saturday morning to Century 21 in the Financial District and work my way back up to Midtown Mahattan where I was staying. Ok, so I get the Century 21 which is like 4 floors of madness! It literally has every luxury designer you can possibly think of and some you may have never heard of as well. It was overwhelming! Add on top of that the fact that it is PACKED with shoppers and they were AGGRESSIVE. This store is well organized so it’s not hard to navigate and honestly to truly get the most of the experience you would need an entire day to spend going through this treasure trove. The prices are great. Everything that I saw was between 65% and 75% off retail price. I sent pictures of some raspberry Blumarine gloves that were just divine! These cashmere lined leather gloves were gorgeous and were $69.95 (65% off retail price). I require a size 7 glove and could only find 6 1/2 and 8. I passed on the gloves. I regret that now! I, also, sent a picture of a Pucci coat that was 73% off, which is fantastic, but even at that reduced price was still too expensive for my broke ass. I spent 2 1/2 hours going through the womens clothing and accessories before moving onto the Men’s section. This area is much smaller, but just as impressive. They had the most wonderful selection of designer suits ever seen by my eyes! Valentino, Hugo Boss, Brioni, Armani, etc., etc., etc…. All of them were marked at between $500 and $700. They also had an in-house tailor to fit them perfectly. Nice touch for a discount store. I got a Roberto Collina shirt for you, a Guy Laroche scarf for Mitch, and a Hugo Boss tie for my hubby. I wanted him to have this tie for his event Saturday night, just to give his look a little more oomph.
At this point, I needed to make a decision. Keep shopping at Century 21 or move onto the other stores I had on my list. I was burning daylight so I needed to move on. I left Century 21 with a vow to return and headed to Gramercy Park. I had 2 thrift stores on my list for this area: The St. Georges Thrift Store and the Vintage Thrift Store. St. Georges had a 4.8 out of 5 star rating so I was quite excited to find this store. It was small. It was the size of my living room. Believe it or not, I still found some good stuff! I sent a picture of a St. Johns sweater set and a Fendi sweater vest. The St. John was marked at $25, but had a small hole at the shoulder of the cardigan so I passed on it. It was such a small hole it could have been repaired but I fell in love with the Fendi vest. I purchased it for $20.
Next, I went to Vintage Thrift which was sadly closed on Saturdays. Undeterred, I headed to Chelsea to the Angel Thrift Store. I was about to flip out when I walked up on the store. It was big! I went inside and saw so many wonderful suits, pants, dresses, coats and handbags. Unfortunately, the prices on these great names were not small. YSL suit was marked $200. Armani dress was $150. They definitely had a different perspective on the word “thrift”. I did look around, but did not purchase anything.
By now, I had spent my whole day shopping. I hit a couple of art galleries before they closed and headed back up to Midtown to rest my weary feet.
Overall, if I could do it again, I would pick out some more places and make sure I had a couple of days to devote to thrifting. Next time I really want to go back to hit the store that was closed on Saturday. I really think that one would have been a good one.
Umie

Yes I think I will take you home Valentino.

I was on my knees (get your mind out of the gutter) for what felt like hours, sealing the grout on our new tile floors. When it was all over I got up and out of my house, immediately I drove to Vallue Village Thrift store. I needed some fresh air is how I would phrase it, WINK WINK. I pillaged through the mens long sleeve shirts and stumbled upon this gorgeous black silk Valentino dress shirt. Click the slide show on the link for Valentino and see how the new designers Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pier Paolo Piccioli are creating red carpet worthy elegance. I want to find every item on the Valentino slideshow one day at the thrift stores….GOD willing. The shirt has the Valentino logo all over but done in a subtle manner. Classic and elegant as the day is long, plus it’s my size! I think the fresh air did me a world of good. Toodles for now. Daniel

For a second I thought I had myself an Arco lamp.

Several years ago I was driving down the street and saw, on the sidewalk, what appeared to be an Arco floor lamp. I turned my car around so fast you would have thought I was Mario Andretti. It turned out not to be an Arco lamp ( designed by Achille Castiglioni and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni) but non the less a pretty spectacular floor lamp. This lamp was just sitting on sidewalk waiting for the trash collectors to take it off to the landfill. The lamp comes apart in three pieces and I noticed a little blue label on the base near the black marble that said “made in Italy” as I was disassembling. The marble base must weigh 70 pounds but I hurled that lamp sculpture into my car and drove home as fast as I could. I made a nice home for that lamp for years and when I moved to our new house took it with us, you can never have enough lighting. Over the weekend we realized we just don’t have enough floor space so up into our attic it went, all 70 pounds of it. To this day I’m always blown away by what I see people throwing away and 10 out of 10 times I will stop to investigate. I don’t mind digging in someone trash or stopping in the middle of the street to grab a gorgeous floor lamp, even if it’s not an Arco lamp. Toodles for now. Daniel

A Roberto Collina something something!

Umie is in New York, she called me yesterday to tell me about her thrifting adventures. I asked her to please email me her escapade and I will post in on my blog. So once I get the photos and details I will pass it on to you. She did mention that she found me a little Roberto Collina something something. I must confess that I had never heard of this guy but when I Googled his website and saw his creations, I was in LOVE. Roberto Collina’s designs are so fabulously constructed, modern, and of course Italian. I can’t wait for my present from New York. Thanks Umie for shining a light on a designer I had never heard. Now go out and shop some more girl and tell me all about it. Toodles for now. Daniel
